Irish times article into the Ryan report into child abuse in institutions in the Irish State (aka ‘The Commisson to Inquire into Child Abuse’).

Here’s a sobering read: the Ryan report Executive Summary.

Here’s the report in full. Not for the faint hearted or those who believe we should always trust the State.

One conclusion stands out for me in particular:

The deferential and submissive attitude of the Department of Education towards the Congregations compromised its ability to carry out its statutory duty of inspection and monitoring of the schools

A ‘deferential and submissive attitude’ seems to characterise so much of the State’s inability to confront the problems endemic in our society, and nowhere more so than in the tacit pact of silence that emerged between so many organs of the State that should have been there to protect its most vulnerable.
